LASER POINT FOCUS: With miniature protection goggles in place, a small blue parrot named Obi flew through laser-illuminated microparticles to her perch yielding surprising new insights on winged flight. Although there are a few theories flying around, how slowly flapping wings generate lift has previously not been studied extensively. Eric Gutierrez of Stanford University’s Lentik Lab is studying those properties.Using high speed video, he noticed the swirling laser particles broke up around Obi’s wingtips; contrary to the three most common explanations for lift – so it’s back to the drawing board.- From a “New York Times” video

BUD FACES THE BOOT: What with kookaburras and wild cockatoos, you’d think our Aussie friends would be used to loud birds. However, a Queensland woman is “horrified” that her local council told her to get rid of Bud, her Alexandrine parakeet, within 14 days or face a $2875 fine. Sue Mariner and Bud, her pet of three years, moved from Sydney to Bribie Island last year. Bud goes everywhere with her, including the bathroom and shopping. But a morning routine of fresh air and “talking to all the other birds” has grounded the pair after a noise complaint to the Moreton Bay Regional Council. “Because they were so loud I think the neighbors got jack of it,” Mariner said. A ranger showed up on Mariner’s door saying, “That’s too big, you can’t have it.” According to the Council’s rules, Bud is classed as a large parrot; along with cockatoos; and therefore isn’t allowed on property less than 1000 square meters. “I went and had a look on (the) Moreton Bay (Council’s) rules and regulations. You can have 40 pigeons in your backyard or three chickens, but I can’t have one Bud,” Mariner said. A distraught Mariner posted about her ordeal on a local Facebook page which was inundated with supportive comments. Mariner said if she is forced to rehome Bud, she’ll get 40 pigeons and three chickens instead because that’s allowed. “Can you imagine the noise that 40 pigeons would make?” she said. For now, Bud is confined to quarters. The Council counters that they can’t comment on individual cases but are obligated to respond to complaints. Violators may apply for a review and may be given an extension The Animal Management Local Law has been in place since 2011. – From https://amp.nine.com.au/…/f1fb656e-153b-43dc-aabe.

EXPO IS A GO: The COVID epidemic dealt a downsizing, if not knockout, blow to many once traditionally annual bird shows in northeastern states including New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, But following a successful SRO show with visitors from at least three states last fall featuring speakers, presentations, vendors and info tables; Ray Schwarz will be hosting the Birds Of A Feather’s 23rd Annual Bird Expo and Mart in NH this weekend. Schwartz does have some stiff competition as 4/15 also features bird events in Louisiana, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Canada -and even a joint appearance of parrots with migrating whales in California. Check HOT DATES for more info!

RAGE IN A CAGE: Well meaning people will sometimes approach parrot owners and say how they don’t like seeing birds in cages. Mark Bittner, author of “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill noted a different angle while serving as speaker at a parrot breeders conference. One attendee believed that all parrots should be brought in from the wild, that all their habitat would soon be destroyed, and that they should remain in captivity forever. Related: The naturalized cherry head conures, the focus of “TWPOTH” have recently been voted San Francisco’s (unofficial) official animal in a newspaper contest. Many clubs have changed part of their monikers from “Caged Birds” to “Cage Birds”, not that it seems to make much of a difference,

TIP O’ THE WEEK:. Harrison’s Bird Foods in their April Bulletin Bird newsletter says a bird’s refusal or acceptance to eat a certain product normally has nothing to do with taste and everything to do with what the bird is familiar with.

LOST AND FOUND IN THE WILD: Is it possible that some of the parrot species presumably lost to extinction may be rediscovered? The dusky yetraka – a small olive and yellow-throated bird that hops around on the ground – has been rediscovered by an expedition led by The Peregrine Fund in Madagascar. The last documented sighting was in 1999, making it one of the top 10 most wanted lost birds by the Search for Lost Birds, a collaboration between Re:wild, American Bird Conservancyand BirdLife International This tiny bird has eluded ornithologists for 24 years, but the team, led by The Peregrine Fund‘s Madagascar Program, recently found the species in two different remote sites:. – Read more here: https://www.rewild.org/…/found-mysterious-songbird… #LostBirds Thanks, Angela

OLDIES BUT GOODIES: Your parrot might outlive you. What then? See the Aprii ’23 “Pet Gazette’ feature story by George Sommers. duxburypetgazette Photo by George Sommers

LISTEN TO THE MOCKING BIRD: It’s not bad enough she doesn’t like men in general. One Congo African grey mocks an ailing man’s chronic cough. Jack’s (yes, she’s a she), owner Lorna Webb and her dad who is suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) formerly lived in in Bedford in the UK for 10 years. Although Lorna and parrot moved out five years ago, Jack continues to copy the dad’s coughing and spluttering, to this day. Said Lorna Webb, “It’s strange to think that long after my dad has passed, his coughs will still be echoing around in my flat.” She says that despite the seriousness of her dad’s condition, the family maintains a dark sense of humor about the bird’s behavior.  “Like many African greys, Jack has a very strong gender preference toward women – she hates men, without exception,” said Lorna Webb. “When Jack and I lived with my dad, she would sneak across the floor silently and attack the back of his ankles. Or she’d fly down and bite the back of his neck.” Even so, Lorna Webb said her father loves the parrot. “However, he is absolutely terrified of her,” she added – “and with good reason.” – For more, including video: nypost.com › 2023/03/27 › parrot-mocks-man-withParrot mocks man with chronic cough due to COPD:

THE VOTES ARE IN; THE PARROTS WIN: The naturalized cherry head conures made famous in “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” book and documentary film eked out a narrow 51.3 % victory over the sea lions of Pier 39 to become the unofficial Official Animal of San Francisco, per a contest that started out as a podcast and was picked up by “The San Francisco Chronicle”. Supervisors Myrna Melgar and Aaron Peskin have pledged to support a resolution naming the winner the official Official Animal of S.F. The contest began with 16 critters winnowed down to two. Sea lions led in the first three rounds and seemed to be surfing to an easy victory until an October surprise, which actually happened in March. “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” author Mark Bittner explains “Whoever runs the Twitter account for the city government retweeted a post from Pier 39, lobbying for the sea lions. Pier 39 is a private, for-profit corporation.” It could be that supporters of the 14 runners-up coalesced behind the parrots. Analysts said of the winners “They’re eccentric, stubborn and colorful. Kind of random. Resilient. They just got here, and yet they still fly through the city like they own the place. Travelers seemingly from another galaxy, who made S.F. their home.”- From https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/official-animal-wild-parrot-17869732.php?fbclid=IwAR2r1kc4XIR8xwWvLHGYNugi5JPx_MfUDlryGPXY0FFuC997qW1v.

THE ODD COUPLES: Parrots ‘n’ whales? Or How about parrots ‘n’ owls? April offers a bonanza of parrot related events. Two of the more intriguing ones feature some odd parings. Fly with the macaws, or rather hike as they free fly through the San Diego chaparral to the beach. Afterwards, Guinness the Eurasian eagle owl, Ripley the spectacled owl and Beatrix the barn owl join the fun for an Owl Prowl. Presumably, owls and parrots will be kept safely apart. There was an attempted attack by a barred owl on a New Hampshire family’s quaker parrot recently! A Whale of a Day celebrates the return of migratory grey whales to Baja, California. But parrots will be part of the festivities as South Bay Bird Society members will be on hand presenting some of their pet birds at an informational booth, and the Fine Feathered Friends Foundation booth will offer information on rehoming birds. More info on both events in HOT DATES

NOT TO HARSH YOUR MARSHMALLOW PEEPS, BUT: If you’re tempted to attempt free flying your parrot – and you shouldn’t without extensive training – beware the risks. The b & g in the video below recovered from a potentially fatal accident. Owner’s response: “Accidents happen.” Yup, and they could be costly and tragic. While “beak” does run the occasional item on free flying (including this issue) it is a controversial undertaking.

BUT CATS DON’T LAY EGGS: and frankly we’d be suspicious of anything looking like a chocolate egg coming out of a rabbit. No parrot made the cut in this year’s Cadbury Eggs Easter Bunny substitute contest.. Ping, a duck from South Dakota,. was the only bird among 10 finalists.. Skeeter the lovebird, bearing a strong resemblance a blue Peep, was the most recent parrot winner. This year’s winner is Crash the cat. After breaking his leg and jaw and losing an eye, Crash became a resident shelter cat who performs cute tricks. ·

NOAH’S ARK NEEDS BAIL OUT: Since the removal/replacement of its original founders, Noah’s Ark Sanctuary in Locust Grove, GA. has been plagued by controversy; one recent incident being 700 vultures, dead from from avian flu found on the property. Carney Anne Nasser, an animal protection attorney, who pitched the wildlife trafficking case against “Tiger King,” Joe Exotic that led to his conviction, is now the lead plaintiff on the Notice of Intent to sue Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary on allegations of multiple federal violations. The wild parrots of Telegraph Hill vs. the sea lions of Pier 39 for the Official Animal of San Francisco championship.
The wild parrots of Telegraph Hill vs. the sea lions of Pier 39 for the Official Animal of San Francisco championship. Brant Ward/The Chronicle and Jessica Christian/The Chronicle

ELECTION PITS PARROTS AGAINST SEA LIONS: The city named after St. Francis, patron saint of animals; does not have an “official” animal – even though San Francisco does have an official flower, official songs and even an official cocktail. The “San Francisco Chronicle” hopes to correct that oversight with the unofficial “Official Animal of San Francisco” contest. The primary winnowed 16 critters down to two candidates: sea lions vs. parrots. The sea lions of Pier 39 showed up after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, charming the city during a grim time. The wild cherry head conures are also relatively recent arrivals, profiled in the 2003 documentary “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.” “After giving it considerable thought, I’ve made my choice,” says .Mark Bittner, author of “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.” (Hmmmm, wonder what that would be.) Anyone with an email address is eligible to vote, but hurry as the winner will be determined on April 3. This election even comes with its own developing scandal. According to Bittner, “Whoever runs the Twitter account for the city government retweeted a post from Pier 39, lobbying for the sea lions. Pier 39 is a private, for-profit corporation. Why is the city government getting involved with something like that? The sea lions hang out at Pier 39, and the company views the sea lions as good business. Whoever did this more than likely was trying to do the company a favor. Somebody called the mayor’s office pointing out how inappropriate it was, so they had it taken down. The sea lions are corporate. The parrots are grass roots.” -From Mark Bittner and https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/2023/sf-official-animal-vote/

‘CINE STEALERS: Not a week goes by, it seems, without a high profile parrot robbery – too surprising given the astronomical prices large parrots are fetching these days. But this one had a rare happy ending. A hooded but otherwise undisguised man strolled up to a Santa Ana, CA front porch in broad daylight and snatched a 4′ by 2′ cage with Luna the African grey parrot inside on March 12. A second man shoved the cage into the back of a red SUV with the license plate removed. Even worse, Luna; who’s been with the family for 10 years, is on a special diet and requires daily medication. The family says their winged companion was getting some fresh air, and they are surprised at how quickly he was taken. Santa Ana police say detectives used surveillance video to track down the SUV and identify a person of interest. Luna was found when police searched the suspect’s home Tuesday afternoon. A woman in the residence said the parrot was given to her as a gift by the suspect, who was not there. Luna was reunited with family.. RETURN OF THE SPIX UPDATE: The Brazilian Caatinga, endemic homeland of Spix’s macaws, has a semi-arid climate with a dry period lasting up to eight months until year’s end when the rainy season begins. Within a few days, the desert-like semi-savannah is transformed into a green landscape with tall shrubs, trees with dense foliage, and smaller grasses and herbs. This time of year brings gale-force winds and hefty rainfall. The creeks are flooded and the roads are impassable. The good news is, the recently released Spix’s macaws handle this weather well and have no problems with the storms. Every bird is doing well, and couples have formed. – From Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots e.V. is in Caatinga, Bahia, Brazil.

PARROT PR: There are roughly 690 Puerto Rico parrots on the island—including those in captive breeding aviaries. This may not seem like a lot, considering that at one time there were about a million of the green, blue and red birds ranging throughout the island but deforestation cut the wild population down at one point to 13. Successful reintroduction efforts are continuing the bounce back in numbers. – For more, see https://wildlife.org/tws2022-reintroduction-is-boosting-puerto-rico-parrot-survival/?fbclid=IwAR1Gbzjo0wfiZELc2c-m1IFlFD97ceFh6-0vUn692dNMf-6SEJaq3SCZP9E

BIRD TV: Pet bird owners will soon (if not already) have a channel exclusively for them – as long as they have Smart TV Roku sticks. Potential programming includes creating a better companion bird/owner communication, music, artwork, past broadcasts of international radio shows and knowledgeable guests in the bird community. Also featuring bird therapy music created in house; using subsonic and ultrasonic sound to create a calming effect for not only yourself, but especially for your companions free of charge. — “America’s Favorite Videos” recently featured a macaw saying, “It was the other bird”

And btw, there are at least 6 parrots of various sizes in “The family birds”, a 1921 painting by French Friant.

SIZE MATTERS to parrots that live in cages. Inappropriately sized cages could beget a host of negative consequences ranging from behavioral, like plucking and screaming, to medical, like severe muscle atrophy or cardiovascular conditions. For 401Gives2023, Rhode Island Parrot Rescue would like to raise $5,400 necessary to replace 3 XL cages for their largest residents and purchase 3 walk-in aviaries that are 86.5″L x 60.5″W x 80.39″H. MAILBAG: Contrary to statements by two Chinese tourists that they had never seen parrots in their country, Dr. Amy Hopkins of the Parrot Club writes: When I was there, I stopped at a small zoo somewhere. To my surprise, they had parrots in these beautiful very large outdoor aviaries. No toys as we would define them, but even better the aviaries were filled with branches, ropes, and all kinds of natural materials for them to play on and with. They looked very well-cared for. .– I believe there are parrot native to Southern China.: adds Kashmir Csaky, International Celebration of Birds Administrator: EDITOR’S NOTE: Web information on wild parrots in China is sketchy. There are several varieties of parrot species in Asia, so it is reasonable to assume there are some in China.American Federation for Aviculture legal eagle Adrianne Mock writes: Here’s the link to the FULL information on the USDA regulations https://online.flippingbook.com/view/575984200/ONLINE.FLIPPINGBOOK.COM USDA Regulations and Links Foster Parrots, “Parrot Confidential” and animal rights took it on the chin from all directions. Laurella Desborough, for instance, writes: When it involves Foster Parrots, it is tinged with animal rights nonsense. Marc Johnson is no expert in anything about parrots except in how to collect funds from the public which is his basic goal. Unbelievable amount of total ignorance about parrots is the basic foundation of Foster Parrots. Consider he once tried to encourage avian vets to push for state laws to make it ILLEGAL to keep parrots! A real bird love there…NOT. ,,, in reading the detailed material presented to USDA by the animal rights orgs that their knowledge about parrots and their care is absolutely pitiful. Yet, they have the nerve to want to tell the rest of us HOW to care for our parrots. These people are arrogant and ignorant beyond belief. — From Kashmir Csaky, International Celebration of Birds Administrator: I am also deeply concerned about the lack of knowledge put forth by the animal rights people who try to legislate how we keep birds. Frankly, I would like to create tests similar to the MCAT. Only people who can pass would be involved in policy making. Foster’s Parrots did not verify their data. Sounds a lot like “Parrot Confidential”. As a person who co-parents (parent raises) and hand-raised parrots, I see zero difference when it comes to feather picking. I helped him [Marc Johnson] out when he first started. The numbers on PC were so messed up. All you had to do was check AMVA data to know that PC data was not even close to correct. Even now that there are more birds in the US the numbers do not come close to what they were in PC. AMVA updates the numbers regularly and includes dogs, cats and horses. It is meant to help vet students decide which field they want to work in. Oh and the data on the AMVA site is for birds and is not limited to parrots. This makes the data in PC even more ridiculous. 7,538,000 birds now vs 40 million **Unwanted Parrot**. https://www.avma.org/…/repo…/us-pet-ownership-statisticsAVMA.ORGU.S. pet ownership statisticsU.S. pet ownership statistics — EDITOR’S NOTE: Opinions expressed in MAILBAG are those of the writers and not necessarily of this column.

MYSTERY OF THE BALL GAME MACAWS SOLVED: Two blue & gold macaws descended from the the sky and crashed a Florida collegiate softball game, as reported a few weeks ago in this blog. The pair flew around the field checking out the proceedings with one even landing on an umpire’s shoulder. A bewildered ESPN announcer wondered aloud if the colorful spectacle was part of the game.. Now, the mystery macaws have been identified: Tiki and Zelu, are owned by Megan Brown; who says, “These are my birds. They are free flight trained and they got a little curious about all the ruckus.” – Info from social media. Thanks, Angela

BUDDY THE QUAKER ESCAPES OWL ATTACK:A Merrimack, NH family was celebrating St. Patrick’s Day when an uninvited guest showed up – and not for the corned beef and cabbage. In the middle of dinner, Cynthia Auger heard a loud bang.. “So I came in and I looked out the windows, and all of a sudden in the tree, I could see this big, huge owl,” Auger said. Smaller birds are part of barred owls’ diet and apparently this one was eyeing Buddy, the family’s Quaker parrot, as a potential dinner. Auger worried that the owl would break through the window, but after numerous tries, the predator finally gave up and flew away. Buddy and the Augers’ glass were saved, for now Perhaps the owl decided a Halloween sequel, would be more appropriate. – See more, including video; here: Owl tries to break through window of NH home to eat family’s …

NO PARROTS IN CHINA?: Two Chinese women flew to Los Angeles, then from LA to Orlando where they, rented a car and drove to Key West, to Nancy Forrester’s Secret Garden. “We do not receive a lot of visitors,” Forrester says; so she asked how they knew about the parrot refuge. They said they found out about it through Google and that there’s nothing like it in China – and according to them, no parrots.. They seemed overjoyed interacting with the parrots and Forrester asked them to talk to the birds in Chinese. One told Lucy the scarlet macaw how important the color red is in China. Lots of foot waving and big eagle wing display were performed for the visitors from afar..

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES are afoot in many of the “big box” pet stores, It’s already been some time since they stopped the sales of birds larger than conures. Most don’t offer puppies, rabbits and kittens, although some have adoptable ones. Even some once common tropical fish; like neon tetras and corydoras catfish, are hard to find. Instead, we are seeing these stores selling hydroponic and house plants – and one such store this writer wandered into recently even had a selection of toy plastic animals. And just to complicate things a bit further, some cities including Boston and New York are considering bans on pet store sales of guinea pigs, allegedly because large numbers of them are being surrendered to after being purchased during the COVID pandemic.

‘CINE STEALERS: Burglar(s) managed to get past metal security doors, security cameras and locks of on all of the bird cages at the bird store, Birds & More in Lawndale, CA wo weeks ago; nabbing two African greys and one double-yellow headed Amazon. Karen Allen, the owner of the 55+ year old bird store, asks, “Please watch out for non store bird sales of African greys and Amazon. We are absolutely devastated that thieves look at these lives as just money, when to us they are our whole world. Please call us if you see these types of bird sales that seems too good to be true they are more than likely stolen.” Contact the store with any info at (310) 370-7550.

PLUCK THAT: Although hand reared baby parrots are sought after, 17% of hand reared parrots turn out to be self pluckers vs. 1% raised by their parrot parents, according to Foster Parrots Ltd. and The New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary, whose views are frequently add odds with the views of many in the parrot keeping world.

DOES YOUR BIRD SMELL?: It may strike some as odd, but there is a substantial subset of parrot owners who enjoy sniffing their birds. Moreover, Olfactory Sensation in Birds is Better than You’ve Been Told is the subject of an April 1 webinar, presumably not an April Fools’ joke. see HOT DATES for more info.

AFA ON USDA REGS: In 2002, Congress amended the definition of animal in the AWA by limiting the exclusion of birds from that definition to only those “bred for research,” which explicitly placed birds not bred for research and not otherwise excluded from regulation under the protection of the AWA. While that amendment placed birds not bred for research under the protection of the Act, the USDA did not immediately promulgate regulatory standards specific to birds, causing several animal welfare organizations to file lawsuits against the Department. In 2020, an opinion by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in one such case resulted in the District Court’s ordering USDA to publish a proposal in the Federal Register to establish regulatory standards for birds no later than February 22, 2022, and to publish a final rule no later than 1 year after publication of the proposal. Establishing standards in the AWA regulations specifically for birds is necessary to ensure animal welfare and align the regulations with the intent of the Act. INVADING IRELAND: Indian ringneck parrots have been spotted in parks in Dublin. In other European cities, including London and Amsterdam, the “invasive” parakeets have become so established and numerous that they are looked on by some as pests. The parakeets, native to Africa and Asia; have been blamed for all the usual reasons, i.e..outcompeting native species, crop and orchard raiding and, of course; noise. However, they mostly thrive in urban environments where they often frequent bird feeders, BirdWatch Ireland calls for the public report sightings to the National Bidiversity Data Centre. – From BirdWatch Ireland calls for reports of invasive parrot .

Happier days with Robert :”Baretta” Blake and one of the Freds. – From Facebook

BUT WHAT ABOUT FRED?: Or more to the point, Freds. Fred the triton cockatoo was sidekick to “Baretta”; on boomer era TV. There were 2, 3, 4 or even 6 “Freds”, depending on who you ask. Among his tricks was answering the phone for the title named detective, played by Robert Blake. One “Fred” was played by Lalah. S/he (there is some dispute over this “Fred’s” gender) was from Korea and was so named because s/he would sing a short song in a foreign language and say “la la” at the end. Blake “didn’t do the time” as he was acquitted of the crime of murdering his wife, with whom he had a rocky relationship. Nor was Blake especially fond of Lalah. Blake was reclining with his legs crossed at his feet and his hat pulled down over his eyes in a scene where the ‘too was supposed to walk down Blake’s legs to his feet and nibble his toe but reportedly bit it instead, drawing blood. The ‘too would fly at him, chase him and bite him. Lalah was used in many scenes, but eventually they could not be in the same area together. Weird Harold was used as a stunt double for flying sequences. Another alleged Fred, Sweetheart, was also used in a California bird show. Yet another “Fred” was played by Mr. White, according to some sources. Unlike Blake, who died two weeks ago; at least two Freds are still reportedly hanging in. Lalah passed away Christmas Day 1977. Mr. White is at Berwick studios in California and Weird Harold is at the San Diego Zoo. Former TV star Fred is not to be confused with the late Fred the ‘too that resided in the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Australia and and was said to be over 100 years old. That Fred was even sent a letter from the late Queen of England for a recent birthday., – From Wikipedia, Facebook, https://arew.org/what-happened-to-fred-the-cockatoo and https://www.wrde.com/news/a-local-bird-is-set-to-star-in-an-upcoming-movie/article_243e1ef4-c1d9-11ed-9ef5-cbee58e952ce.html

LOST ‘TIEL COPS RIDE ON GIANT FERRIS WHEEL: Joel the lost cockatiel turned up (literally) one hundred feet above the ground, hitching a ride on the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, a 187-foot tall ferris, errr observation wheel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Presumably, he bypassed the ticket booth and flew up on his own. Fortunately, an employee was on a ladder doing a daily check. He heard chirping and spotted Joel, who immediately climbed on him. The employee brought Joel safely to the ground. “We’re really proud of our crew for responding the way they did, not only getting the bird to safety but also being able to track down his owner,” said .Sean Bailey, marketing manager ‘Tiel owner Christine Iturrino, a Myrtle Beach resident, had offered a $500 reward for the bird who had been missing for several days. Joel enjoys music, especially “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel. after whom he was named. Maybe Joel just needed a fun excursion for a change! – Read more at: https://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/news/local/article272859035.html#storylink=cpy Some info from Wikipedia

SPEAKING OF CELEBRITOOS: Magic the umbrella cockatoo is starring in an upcoming movie, ‘Le Parrot’- a comedy about a family that has to deal with a talkative parrot at a funeral. Moreover, he has a book and has been a greeter at weddings. The UC lives at M and D Bird farm in Harbeson, DE.. “He plays with the internet, he plays with the customers, he drives a car. This guy is a prima diva!” owner Danton Sherwood says. Coincidentally (or perhaps an inspiration?) Andrew Jackson owned a parrot that had to be removed from the late president’s wake for swearing. – From https://www.wrde.com/news/a-local-bird-is-set-to-star-in-an-upcoming-movie/article_243e1ef4-c1d9-11ed-9ef5-cbee58e952ce.html

CAVEAT EMPTOR: There have been a number of bird breeders showing up on Facebook recently, posting photos of baby birds and using bad English. Some even show “mutual” friends. Beware of scams. They are increasing. Never send money for any bird you haven’t seen. — If a commenter tells you to use a whatapp or Instagram tracking group to help find your lost bird it is a SCAM. Please do not fall for this. They sympathize and they seem concerned to trick you. Please report these posts so these users can be blocked permanently.

RHODE ISLAND PARROT RESCUE NEWS: The adoption program resumed as of February 1. However, relinquishment remains temporarily closed. Renovations at the new property will be wrapping up soon before moving the flock. My power company, which powers most of Connecticut, now has an aggressive tree trimming program to keep tree branches away from power lines to avoid storm outages and such. Sounds like that would be useful everywhere.” writes Dr. Amy Hopkins, The Parrot Club president.

There are alternatives to expensive, often quickly destroyed parrot toys. Read on! – Photo by George Sommers

USDA REGS for the transport of baby birds and birds used for exhibition, breeding, the pet trade and some research have been passed at the urging of he American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) and the Avian Welfare Coalition (AWC) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Many pet bird interests are suspicious of the two groups’ motives; with some even claiming their ultimate aim is to ultimately ban all pet ownership. An online livestream by Robin Shewokis Sullivan on 3/10 should help shed some light on the long and complex document. See HOT DATES.. We do know that size matters in the Animal Welfare Regulations in determining licenses for selling or exhibiting birds. Listed as small – less than 250 grams (not exclusively parrots) – are cockatiels, parrotlets, lovebirds, caiques, senegals, mini macaws, conures, loris and pionus. The 250 gram+ crowd includes cockatoos, African greys, eclectus, macaws and Amazons.

BIRDS BEHAVING BADLY: Louis the African grey’s job is to chat up patrons of the Nailmakers Arms pub in Norton, England. But lately, there’s been some disturbing additions to his vocabulary, including the F-word. “One minute he’s saying what a pretty boy, but then he’ll go off with a foul mouthed rant,” says Andy Ashby, who purchased the pub last year. Asbhy adopted Louis from a family who had a baby, so he used to copy the noises that the baby’s toys would make. The 5 1/2 year old parrot and Ashby originally shared a flat where they enjoyed watching action movies until the bird started picking up cuss words from the characters in the movies.. At the bar, Ashby felt he had to to post a disclaimer on the cage reading “I swear. Please don’t be offended” – not to mention not getting too close or risk getting bitten. Ashby is now trying to retrain Louis to steer clear of the ‘bar room language’. Seems a tad contradictory, especially if well served hooligans get a notion to egg Louis on. If all this seems “deja vuish”, in ’20 a British zoo banished African greys Billy, Eric, Tyson, Jade and Elsie from public view as they were encouraging each other to swear. The foul mouthed five are part of Lincolnshire Wildlife Centre’s colony of 200 grey parrots. “The more they swear the more you usually laugh, which then triggers them to swear again,” says Steve Nichols, park CEO. He said the cursing birds sounded “like an old working men’s’ club scenario where they are all just swearing and laughing.” Park employees initially found it funny, but Nichols felt a time out was in order before visiting kids heard them. The plan was to separate the rowdy mouthed fids ”so at least if they do swear it is not as bad as three or four of them all blasting it out at once.” He also hopes the abusers learn nicer words from their new cage mates and not vice versa. “If they teach the others bad language and I end up with 250 swearing birds, I don’t know what we’ll do.” – From https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/people/louis-the-swearing-pub-parrot-handed-warning-notice-at-nailmakers-arms-in-sheffield-40442 and https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-11836279/Foul-mouthed-parrot-banned-watching-TV-stop-saying-F-wo and https://www.huffpost.com/entry/cursing-parrots-lincolnshire-wildlife-park_n_5f73a420c5b6374c5585beeb and other and other “Net reports

WHAT’S THE DIFF?: Here are a few simple ways to tell a green wing aka red & green macaw apart from a scarlet macaw. 🔍 Although both macaws are predominately red, scarlet macaws have a very distinctive yellow band of feathers on their wing, unlike the red & green macaw which, as the name implies, has a green band. Secondly, the red & green macaw is much larger than the scarlet macaw and has red feathers on its otherwise bare cheeks, whereas the scarlet macaws cheeks are entirely bare. There are a few more ways you could help distinguish the two, but these are the simplest. RULED OUT: Pet bird owners have been bracing for the worst when it was announced that the US Dep’t. of Agriculture would be looking into new rules regarding keeping captive birds. The new rules are out and the only generally agreed upon consensus is that it’s a long and complex document. Reactions range from a feeling that the impact on individual pet bird owners is minimal to parts are problematic to it’s part of an extreme “animal rights” agenda to eventually ban the keeping of any pets. Hopefully sorting it all out will be a virtual Q&A hosted by David Garcia & Steve Duncan on 3/3. See HOT DATES.. And for more go to.https://www.aphis.usda.gov/…/new…/pet-bird-species…

FOWL BALL: The bird team taking to the field wasn’t the Cardinals, Orioles, Blue Jays or even the Toledo Mudhens. A softball game in Orlando, Florida between Bradley U and Gardner-Webb was interrupted by a pair of blue & gold macaws swooping out of the sky to check it out. One even landed on umpire Chad Stears’ shoulder .”Is this part of the show?” an incredulous ESPN announcer asked, “What is happening right now?” A member of the grounds crew eventually came out and removed the parrot from the umpire’s shoulder and walked off to applause from the crowd. A few questions remain. Were they free flyers? Someone’s escaped pets? Maybe even naturalized ones living in the “wild”? Did the remaining parrot fly off? And what did the guy do with the one that was caught? A video of the incident was up to nearly 14,000 views in a few hours. No further word on whether the remaining macaw flew off nor where the first one went to. – For more, including the video: www.pjstar.com › story › sportsParrots fly into Bradley softball game in Florida, land on umpire

ANOTHER BIRD-GLARY WITH A TWIST: This time a nocturnal smash and grab netted 4 Congo African greys and a yellow headed Amazon from All Animals Hospital in Los Angeles. The burglars went straight for the birds, stuffed them in bags and were out in less than five minutes. In surveillance camera video, you can hear the birds squawking. Three of the birds belonged to the veterinarian and his office manager. Two were being boarded, including 11-year-old Scarlett. Another bird was named Elwood. The hospital, which claims to “know these birds VERY well and can easily identify them” has come up with a unique proposal: “To the 2 male individuals that stole our birds, know that we would reward you more than you could ever sell each bird for, should you decide to return them WITH ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTIONS OR INFORMATION ASKED..” Anyone with info is asked to text (818) 600-1838 or email Help@allanimals-vet.com — More info and see the video here: Suspects sought after 5 beloved parrots stolen from Calabasas ..

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MACAW: Hyacinth macaws substantially smaller than typical have been hiding in plain sight in the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil.. Not a newly discovered species, but downsized versions of the same species, termed ‘dwarf’ hyacinth macaws by researchers. Dr. Neiva Guedes and her team of biologists of the Instituto Arara-Azul (Blue Macaw Institute), with help from Loro Parque, made the discovery by exhaustive analysis of an enormous amount of data. Various factors can affect directly the growth rate of psittacines, including environmental aspects such as temperature and precipitation, food quality and availability, differences between the sexes, hatching-rank, clutch size, diseases, and ectoparasite infestations. – From www.birdguides.com › articles › ornithology’Dwarf’ Hyacinth Macaws identified in Brazilian Pantanal

ROOM DISSERVICE: A woman claims her three cockatiels were stolen out of an Orlando, FL hotel room ironically “the [first and only] moment we took our guard dog out with us and out of the room.” Hotel management came up with several conflicting stories, according to the woman; including a housekeeper took them and gave them to a family who gave them to another family, Or that the local GM, thinking the birds were abandoned’ took them and “rehomed” the birds to a person they met in a Publix parking lot and provided their number – but that phone number was disconnected. Or simply, .”‘that they have no idea what we are talking about and where our birds are..” The woman is pursuing further legal action. – From Facebook

YELLOW COUNT DOWN, BUT NOT OUT: Echo‘s annual, yellow-shouldered Amazon parrot roost count on 1/28 with help from 54 volunteers, at 26 roost sites across Bonaire, found 889 Loras between 6 and 8 a.m. Parrots are notoriously hard to count, which is why the roost count is done simultaneously on one day, between set times with volunteers only counting Loras that they observe flying from the site to reduce double counting. The total is less than in previous years, .however, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the population is decreasing. External factors could include above-average rainfall increasing foliage and affecting the’ ability to see them flying, or the Loras chose new, unknown roost sites. Many volunteers reported hearing Loras but were unable to see them As with all counts the data is only an estimate of the minimum number of yellow-shouldered Amazons on the island. Tracking over time allows Echo to detect long-term trends and what conservation actions are needed on Bonaire. Loras, are classified as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) meaning that they are vulnerable to extinction if efforts aren’t put into place to stop population decline.  ·

Not a new budgie mutation, but how your parakeets might look to each other – or to you under a black light. – From Facebook

PSYCHEDELIC, MAN: In the early 1970’s, a researcher testing the ability of pigeons to discriminate colors discovered by accident that the birds can see ultraviolet (UV) light – like the “black” lights used in many a college dorm of the era to make vividly colored posters glow. The finding was deemed curious but not important. “It was natural for scientists to assume that bird vision is like human vision,” says Geoffrey Hill, an Auburn University ornithologist and the author of Bird Coloration. “After all, birds and humans are both active by day, we use bright colors as cues. No one really imagined birds might see the world differently.” “After the first studies on birds and UV came out, people started saying, ‘Maybe your study of mate choice isn’t valid because you scored the feather colors with the naked eye’,’” says Peter Dunn, a University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee biologist.. In fact, parrot and budgie coloration takes on a whole different spectrum of hues under a black light. A presentation in a special dark room with UV lights at this weekend’s Newcastle Budgerigar Club annual show in Australia will demonstrate how budgies glow in the dark. As a bonus, there will be UV face paints for kids to join in the fun. -. For more info, go to HOT DATES. BIRD BURGLED – FROM TROPICAL FISH STORE:  “Thefts, smuggling and scams keep going up. This is what happens when availability goes down,” says Kashmir Csaky of International Celebration of Birds. Simon, beloved Goffin’s cockatoo mascot of Neptune’s Tropical Fish in Highlands Ranch CO, was stolen. Simon lived full-time at the store and was the star of the shop. The burglary was caught on a security camera. Two thieves in facemasks came in in a newer model black Hyundai Sonata with the plates blocked out and using crowbars, broke open the front door, “They were in and out within three minutes. They are pros, they have done this before,” shop owner Sharon Sullivan said. The suspects headed for the cash register and stole a roll of quarters, the only thing in the drawer. They then kicked in a display and stole a light worth around $150. Seeing nothing else grabbable and of value, one of the suspects then took Simon.“They obviously aren’t bird people, ’cause they aren’t holding her like a bird person would hold a bird,” Sullivan said. “When she’s angry, she bites so I hope she bit those people really hard,” Sullivan said. A reward of $5,000 has been offered for Simon’s safe return. If you have any information, contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office or Sullivan at her store directly. – For more, including video got to https://kdvr.com/news/local/caught-on-camera-thieves-steal-cockatoo-from-highlands-ranch-store/amp/?fbclid=IwAR29nZUr-dlzi7K_ko6lBzfGaG7hmK3U7Y12G2tFISgCGxVn

WINTER WOES: Winters can be cold even south of the Mason Dixon line. At least 13 parrots died over the winter at the Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove, GA according to the sanctuary’s former Animal Husbandry Manager Allison Hedgecot , who alleges, “These sentient beings were denied the necessary provisions and care to ensure their well-being and as a result, they suffered and died.” 11 of those parrots were found dead during a 4 day period when temperatures fell into the single digits at night. One eclectus parrot named Holly chewed on her feet during freezing weather, possibly in an attempt to regain feeling, before she eventually died. This follows up a much criticized euthanizing of several birds at the sanctuary during the recent avian flu outbreak. There have been many calls for the return of founder Jama Hedgecoth and Allison Hedgecoth. There has been no comment on the situation from Noah’s Ark Sanctuary on their Facebook page.

IT’S NOT JUST BALLOONS GETTING SHOT OUT OF THE SKY: Indian ringneck parakeets were shot down out of trees as they slept in a dead of night operation in Hawaii…The midnight mayhem went on until 2 a.m. , according to local residents. A homeowners association claims that they were using air guns merely to scare the “invasive” naturalized birds away but were seen stuffing bodies into garbage bags. What’s more the ‘keets are potentially under government sanctioned fire if introduced bills pass this legislation session which would deliver funds to “control” the rose ringed parakeet population. Officials claim the birds are out of control on Kauai and cause around 10% in losses for small farms on the island. Other cited reasons are that they out compete native birds and and their droppings pose a threat in public health. (Where have we heard these arguments before?) Aloha Hawaiian Parrot Association states: “We are outraged at the state’s senseless shooting and killing of feral ringnecks at Fairway Village. Those birds were sleeping in trees and were totally defenseless and unable to escape, which is exactly why the state chose midnight and darkness to shoot them. What the public might not understand is that ‘controlled’ is a sugar-coated word for ‘killed.'”  Aloha Hawaiian Parrot Association Board member Jan Peterson further suggested “Cut pieces of tin or anything shiny and hang it in the trees. The sun reflects off the material and birds will stay away.” – From https://www.kitv.com/news/poachers-in-waikele-are-killing-hundreds-of-parakeets/article_4c90df6a-ab52-11ed-9095-271acb18abb7.html?fbclid=IwAR3lmydn5B6wPrG-fc52GSLEv3RRSpVzJvfp7YGaho8kmqsPd

MAYBE THEY SHOUD HAVE WINGED II: Even birds need to fly in planes sometimes, but it can get complicated.. “Someone I know who has a bird was wearing a shirt with the bird’s name on it and I guess TSA did not like it as the bird’s name is Isis.” – “I was at the airport after leaving a Parrot Festival in Houston. My carry on bag was being X-rayed, when I noticed a strange look on the TSA agent’s face. He opened my bag and saw two large boings on the top of the suitcase. I had to explain to him they were bird toys. I imagine he thought that they were used to make bombs or something”.- “I was stopped at the airport because I had a [leg] band cutter in my suitcase. They took it away from me. It was a weapon. LOL”

”TOOL TIME: Goffins cockatoos are known to use tools, manufacture tools and now to carry them in anticipation of need. It was once thought only humans could make and use tools, but in the ’60s Jane Goodall observed our closest living relatives, chimpanzees, retrieving termites from holes with stripped twigs. A third species joined the exclusive club of toolset makers in 2021, when Indonesian scientists saw wild Goffin’s toos using three types of tools to extract seeds from fruit. The birds’ tools were similar in complexity to those made by chimps, meaning their cognitive skills could be directly compared. A small number of Goffin’s cockatoos were seen crafting a set of tools designed for three different purposes – wedging, cutting, and spooning – and using them sequentially to access seeds in fruits. This requires similar brain power to a chimp’s for using multiple tools. Ten Goffins had to extract cashews from boxes that required either one or two tool types. They were tested in various ways, but the big challenge was reaching the box with the tools requiring additional movement, including climbing a ladder, and flight..Only five made it through earlier experiments, but four of those that did transported both tools in one go, in anticipation of needing them to open the box. Will they be carrying around little ‘tool boxes next? Stay ‘tooned! –For more, including video: https://theconversation.com/goffins-cockatoo-named-third-species-that-carries-toolsets-around-in-preparation-for-future-tasks-199408

It was important for me to convince him that Roxy should live with me. In the Czech Republic, such cockatoos are rare and he saw them only on TV. I showed him some cute videos of Roxy I warned that Roxy screams loudly, gnaws everything that gets into her powerful beak (the apartment was completely empty and I bought used furniture myself). My landlord said he was “sure this cute bird couldn’t be any louder than his dog”. This bird has become calmer, and she is also not so capricious now. She tries to get maximum attention and affection from every visit of my father and volunteers. She now immediately eats all the fruits and vegetables that are given to her (previously she threw away many fruits or did not take them right away). She herself presses against the edge of the cage to be scratched and stroked. Once every two days she is let out for an hour walk (so far it is not possible to let her out every day). We gave the documents to Roxy for translation and certification into Czech. Next week I will be talking to the lawyer to resolve the issue of Roxy leaving . We need to hurry, because everyone says that the Russian troops are going to attack Kyiv again. Best wishes,Sergii & RoxyCouldn’t be louder than his dog? We think Mr. Landlord is in for a surprise.

MOVIN’ ON UP: :💚 After a devastating flood in their original location in San Diego County, CA, the Chloe Sanctuary for Cockatoos and Parrots had to take up temporary quarters Founder Don Scott just signed escrow papers on a new, permanent house for Chloe, Baba Lou and the others; some of whom have special needs, in a presumably drier area – Pahrump, Nevada.. ❤️

AND THEN THERE WERE 223: Wichita Falls (TX) Humane Society contacted the Parrot Posse about a a seizure of 50-100 birds ranging from finches to macaws from a pet shop, “specializing in birds,” including a back room breeding operation .The Posse had twenty cages and a reasonable amount of food delivered before the seizure,. It’s a lot of birds – latest count was 223 – and they already put in an order for a second wave of food, and nuts. They’ve already spent over $2,000 in supplies, and donations appreciated.

GLIMMER OF GOOD NEWS AFTER QUAKE: A 13-year-old boy was rescued from the rubble of the horrific eatthquake in Turkey with his pet budgie in his hands. He protected the bird for 55 hours straight under the rubble of the 7.7 magnitude quake. While enroute to the hospital in an ambulance Berat Sarı shouted to his aunt to hand his budgie to him. The aunt first embraced the bird, then fed it and made it drink water from the bottle cap that she found. The aunt, who shed tears of joy from time to time, thanked God after seeing her nephew and his little bird alive. – From https://www.dailysabah.com/turkey/turkish-boy-with-pet-bird-in-hand-rescued-55-hours-after-the-quake/news?fbclid=IwAR26ns_9eTpIpHEIRgRjQZpUUON912Tj0uH72cz1ue4hPhKh60Kl3IRDtlg

SO LONG, JURONG: Singapore’s internationally renowned Jurong Bird Park closed its doors on Jan. 3..About 41 million people visited the park over more than five decades of operation since opening 1/3/71.. Ironically, the park’s last show on its last day – Kings of the Skies – was brought to an end by heavy rain .The Lory Loft, Waterfall Aviary and African Treetops were among the most popular features. But no worries if you never had a chance to visit. The park’s staff and more than 3,000 birds are relocating to Bird Paradise at Mandailife Reserve, with a planned re-opening in the second quarter of ’23. – For videos including the last bird show at the Jurong location and a parrot that speaks three languages, along with a stunningly beautiful photo essay, click on https://www.straitstimes.com/multimedia/graphics/2023/01/jurong-bird-park-farewell/index.html?shell&fbclid=IwAR2ItsdGm7fgP4VAU1p9HqfPjwhHMzeRvL1H9cOGDvNe72k0UcxD7A8APw

WE HEARSAY that the “animal lover” young man who allegedly stole the 2 Dallas Zoo monkeys also paid a visit to the Dallas World Aquarium – which has scarlet macaws and several other birds – and was asking the keepers about how they captured the animals when they needed to. Of course, they have fish, too; but they would be harder to stuff under a jacket and smuggle while aboard a bus. Staff recognized the alleged perp from the news and called police and he was arrested nearby. – From Facebook

READING MATERIAL: Jennifer Cunha continues to confound the skeptics. One of her computer trained ‘toos is subject of a new scientific paper and another is a potential TV collaborator. “‘I think my birds have learned to read’, I wrote to researchers at various universities, ‘I wondered if you could help me find out?’ and I attached my proofs,” says Cunha. With encouragement from Dr. Susan Clubb, Cunha presents a first of its kind for animals Her paper on Isabelle the cockatoo decoding phonics passed peer review and has been accepted for publication after six years and a collaboration of researchers from four major universities. Ellie, student ‘too #2, got high marks but skipped school too often and chewing up the cards used in the study so she was “let go” from the study. However, not to be outdone. Ellie has an offer to help “Blues Clues” promote their new touch and feel book. In the study, word sets with 3 syllables, uppercase and lowercase letters, some with complicated suffixes – and all the words started with the same letter, so they couldn’t just read the first letter and get the answer right. – “There are a lot of biases against animals in science,” Cunha says.

VALENTINES PARROTRIVIA: Avian hearts are generally larger than mammalian hearts when compared to body mass. This adaptation allows more blood to be pumped to meet the high metabolic need associated with flight. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird#featheredfactfriday#birdfacts#birdsarecool#aav#aavmember#avianvets#avianmedicine#associationofavianveterinarians#avianhealth#parrothealth#birdhealth

VALENTINES WITH A TWIST: Two parrots were recently married in a lavish ceremony in India; a country which also has been known to have marriages for monkeys, dogs and even frogs. Ramswaroop Parihar from Pipairya raised Myna like a daughter. He came across Badal Lal Vishwakarma who also had a parrot as pet. The friends researched the kundali (a type of astrology) which ascertained the birds were perfectly matched. So they decided to get the two love birds married in a wedding complete with all the traditional Indian rituals. The marriage was witnessed by thousands of people in the village of Pipariya. The ‘baraat’ (marriage procession) was followed by the ‘baraatis’ dancing enthusiastically to dhol beats. Onlookers witnessed as the parrot cage (baraat) went on a small four-wheeler. Later, after the marriage, Parihar gave bidaai to its Myna. He will now occasionally visit Myna’s in-law’s house. – From https://odishatv.in/news/offbeat/man-gets-pet-parrot-married-to-myna-with-band-baaja-baraat-in-traditional-indian-wedding-196454?fbclid=IwAR2mJ4zJmqUafLFOYiDJKneWkG-_Gqo4pSzHh46q8Oo_DYnbzJUvEpSMNAY

SERGII & ROXY UPDATE: (excerpts from letter): Yesterday I moved into a new apartment. Roxy is in Kyiv and many people come to see her. Volunteers help my father now. Roxy was unhappy today that she was photographed with a phone (she does not like it when any gadgets are used in her presence). That’s why Roxy bit my father hard today. My father and volunteers give her a lot of cones and wooden blocks to keep her busy. Handed over the documents to Roxy for translation into Czech. It is necessary for CITES. Tomorrow I’m going to the police to register a new address where I now live and where Roxy should move. I really look forward to when my fluffy princess will be with me again. We need to hurry, because the Russian troops may attack again. P.S. There is no Internet in my new apartment yet, so it is very difficult to view the Facebook feed and reply to your private messages.- Sergii

FADNG PARROT STAR: José Carioca, the cigar-smoking parrot from “Saludos Amigos” (1943) stars alongside pistol-packing rooster Panchito Pistoles and a sombrero wearing Donald Duck in Disney’s 1945 feature film “The Three Caballeros” (made up of 4 short animated films). The movie was produced as part of the studio’s good will message for South America. Jose was  created by the Brazilian cartoonist José Carlos de Brito (J. Carlos) and shown to Walt Disney in his trip to Rio de Janeiro in 1941. While never quite reaching the popularity of Donald Duck (at least in the USA), he did appear in several Disney productions and even made a cameo appearance in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. – From Wikipedia   ·

OH, SNAP: Except for last weekend’s two day stint of record cold weather, it has been a bizarrely warm winter in New England. Still, local rescues like Foster Parrots/New England Wildlife Sanctuary in Rhode Island need to be prepared for when the Montreal Express blows into town. FP preparations include making sure the building is fully stocked with pellets for the pellet stoves, checking the stoves, preparing the wood and double checking emergency equipment. Facilities staff go back into the building at midnight to add pellets to the stoves, which run out quickly when the temperature is in single digits. A staff member returns around 3 a.m. to check the temperature in every section of the building. Generators kick on automatically if the building loses power, but on-site staff have alarms in their cabins to alert them if the power goes out. They check to ensure that the generator has turned on and is working properly, even if this happens in the middle of the night. – For more on Foster Parrots, including video, go to https://www.fosterparrots.com/
