THE BUCKET LIST: Amelia the Catalina macaw was not having a good day. Her ordeal began as she and owner Justin Walls returned from grabbing takeout around 8 p.m. on a recent Sunday. Upon return to their Scotts Valley, CA home, a cat jumped out, startling Amelia. She is as an indoor bird with unclipped wings and her flying muscles are not developed. However, high winds launched her, and birds instinctively go high to avoid predators. “She got some nice vertical lift, and found her way up 30 feet into a tree next door. Ascent is easy,” Walls explained. “A steep descent is extremely difficult for birds. It’s like an advanced maneuver.” The pine tree she settled in was unclimbable and coaxing wasn’t working. “I was like, ‘Crap. This does not look good,’” Walls said. Darkness fell and Amelia hunkered down for the night. Realizing that macaws do not have good night vision, Walls also retired and set his alarm clock for 15 minutes before sunrise. At dawn, the macaw was still there – and a bald eagle was nearby. Multiple calls to emergency services bore no fruit (a 9-1-1 dispatcher told him they don’t do animal rescues anymore, he says). Amelia started squawking, attracting the attention of Janice Allegri. She and husband Phil – neighbors who Walls had never met – went to see what the commotion was about. As luck would have it, the Allegris operate a contracting business. They called son Nick around noon on Monday to see if they could get a vehicle. Nick appeared about half an hour later. He sent Walls up in the bucket toward his pet. As soon as he put his arm out, Amelia’s eyes started “pinning”—a sign of excitement. Back at home, Walls served up her favorite food pellets. In the 15 years Wall has had her, he says Amelia has “only” gotten out three times.
